Is first service A complimentary?

The car has only 5K miles on odometer. Can dealer decline free service since car has low mileage? Message panel tells that A service is due.

They allow you a free checkup within the first like 3k miles of the car, but no free service A. I'm guessing you've had the car for a year that's why the service is coming up? Only 5k miles in a year? Damn, I'll be really lucky if I get less than 15k miles in a year.

The Service A is not free, and not cheap. My dealer wanted $350 for it. Your best bet is to have them (or an independent) do an oil change and then check off all the other items on the Service A list yourself (like checking your seat belts, door latches, wiper blades and tire pressures). The difference in cost between an oil change ($189) and Service A ($350) at the same dealer was $161 for things you could do yourself in 15 minutes.

BTW, you can reset the service reminder yourself using the steering wheel buttons and instructions posted on this forum. No reset tool is needed the way it is on BMWs.

Service A is not complementary but depending on your dealer they do offer a complementary checkup of the car between 1,000 and 3,000 miles. When you take the car in they can top of all fluids, check error codes on the car and make sure to address any of your complaints if you have any.

Service A happens whenever the car reaches 13,000 miles or 1 year since resetting the service computer (whichever happens first). Dealers can not decline to service your car if your car tells you it needs servicing. One reason why you need to perform a Service A so early on the car could be that your car was sitting on a lot for a while and your 1 year was ticking away. I got my current car last June (almost on year ago) but I had to take it in for Service A at the beginning of April. Apparently my car was sitting on a lot somewhere between April and June of last year. If I recall correctly my Service A cost me $268 (including tax).

I didn't know thats how it worked. I assumed they were supposed to reset it at the time of delivery, time on the lot doesn't count. At least thats what I think they are supposed to do unless its a CPO car.

When my wife's car was delivered the dealer didn't do the reset and it was calling for Service A after 6 months. Dealer just reset it and told us to remember to schedule Service A at 12 months or 13,000 miles.

Dealer should be resetting when the vehicle is delivered.

Thanks for replies. It looks my car didn't get reset at delivery. Generally my delivery process was awful, I was about to tear off papers and walk out. So I will do service A at other dealers when one year completed regardless the computer reminder.

I would do it now. Your car has 5,000 miles on it so it is broken in already. You might as well have the break in oil drained along with the metal shaving from the engine.

Thanks, it is a good suggestion. However I have no time now, so the dealer should wait for couple months until I am back from a business trip.
