RE: SL vs. CLS
I'd go with the SL and keep your E500. You built the 500, it is like no other, and you would likely not get much $$ for it anyway. Reap the rewards for your efforts and drive it a while.
That being said, for me, getting a 4 door hot rod is infinitely easier to sell the wife on and more practical with kids; mine are 11 and 9. They are gaga over my Cadi of course having no idea what it is capable of; but it looks cool, is comfy riding over to friends or going out with the wife for dinner and the movies. I wanted to get a Corvette Z06 last fall, found a great deal, but encountered considerable spousal resistance, because it was a 2 seater, and dropped the idea.
Not sure if it helps your thought process, but I'm actively looking for a slightly used E63, with Pano. As much as a I like my 550, it is positively tame compared to CadZilla, and the wife is totally o.k. with the idea of another 4 door Benz in place of the 550.
I'll likely get a W212 in it's late 2nd or 3rd model year as we all know that the later iterations of W211 are really good cars while the earlier years were somewhat wanting, and I expect history will repeat itself to some extent.
Good luck with the hunt, and let us know which way you go.
