2004 E320 Wagon
Towing an RV with a 2004 E320 Wagon
I thought I would share my towing experience. I have read many threads from people looking for towing info. I had a light duty Curt hitch (1 and 1/4" hole) installed on my 2004 E320 wagon. All you can see is the small hole you put the hitch receiver into. Everything is behind the rear bumper. Riverside (CA) Hitch and Trailer (951-785-9353) did the wiring as well. They installed a common 7-way round plug. They had all the parts in stock. I pulled a 2008 Aliner Ease camping trailer, about 3000 lbs. loaded, with 2 adults, in the wagon. I pulled the trailer from S CA to P-Town, MA, with stops in OH/PA/NYC, and back. I put about 6300 miles on the trip. I got between 17 and 18 MPG, mostly in overdrive, lots of cruise control, almost always with the A/C on, and at about 60 MPH. I did this trip last month. I had plenty of power, no overheating at all, despite lots of 100 degree+ days. No extra coolers. I did not connect the electric trailer brakes, did not run a brake wire from car. I sometimes downshifted coming down large hills through the Rockies on I-70. Absolutely no control issues, no sway what so ever. No trailer mirrors. The trailer has about 11 running lights, in addition to the tail lights. The lights were on sometimes all day, no issues. Everything worked perfectly. Trailer is 18' long.
I hope this info helps. Inland Empire (CA) Mercedes Benz dealers were of absolutely NO help. Riverside Hitch is top notch. I will try to attach a picture, taken at Liberty Harbor RV Park, in Jersey City, NJ, (last month)

Glad to hear your E320 performed so well!
Did you find you lacked power up long inclines or steep hills? My brother has an 04 F150 Lariat with 5.4L and we tow a 16ft enclosed trailer at 5000lbs loaded. There were some sections driving through Northern Cali where it would have to kick down pretty good to get power.
