I'M SURE SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE, KNOWS HOW, BUT YOU'LL HAVE TO ASK IN A whisper

I've seen a write-up on this, and do not recall the steps as being very difficult.

there is one (maybe two) microphone-related TSB for W220s, so maybe there is one for your W211 and you can get a free replacement

a. TSB does not mean FREE replacement, it is a Techincal Service Bulletin to help diagnose an issue

b. Replacement is easy, remove mirror and install new mirror .2hrs labor and $1000 in parts.

I guess you missed the word "maybe"...

It's definitely at a dealer's discretion to repair a known fault without charge, and TSBs arise from known faults. It's quieter, cheaper, and less unpopular and brand-damaging to do such repairs through TSBs

And like I said, the steps involved are not complicated

To dislodge the mirror pull down on it really hard.. You'll think you've broken it when it comes loose, but it has a strap in there to keep you from damaging anything. Once it's hanging down, you can pull apart the dome lamp assembly and I believe the wire for the mic is brown and white.

Microphones bad?

I think there are 4 microphones in the mirror of my 05 CDI. Does anyone know how the tech checks if they are good or bad? A forum member wrote that after they were replaced, his bluetooth quality improved greatly.

If you sound muffled on the phone system in the car, the mics are bad. I've learned that this was an epidemic problem on 04-05 W211's. Maybe other years as well. In either 06 or 07, MB when to a completely new design with 2 mic's instead of 4 to resolve the problems.

The individual mic's can be replaced. Warning! the rearview mirror housing is fragile to take a part, but easy to reassemble. Odds are high the small plastic tabs holding the mirror's case together will break while taking it a part.

Ask MBenzNL about how to do this.

Used mirrors cost between $150 to $350. A new MB mirror is $1000. The challenge in buying a used mirror is knowing if the mics are working correctly.

The only diagnostic process that I'm aware of, is to use the mics with a cell phone to determine voice quality.
