2007 E350 SBC question
Hello fellow MB lovers,
I have a couple of questions regarding the infamous SBC system. I read that MB got rid of it in 2007. I drive 2007 E350 but the car was actually manufactured in August of 2006. How can I tell whether it is equipped with SBC or not? The second question would be: if the car does not have the SBC, does the new system bring the same dangers when it comes to replacing the brake pads at home? Can anybody help? Thank you.

You don't.
Do you have a hydraulic pump on passenger side fender under hood?
MB actually killed two birds with one stone in deleting SBC, which in its final year was flawless.
1. They found a way out of dealing with the rumors.
2. They decontented the car without lowering the price.

3. Made it much safer and more dependable.
...if SBC were flawless there wouldnt be a 10 year no mileage restriction repair warranty on it.

You can enter VIN here http://old.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng (full version) - code 806 = SBC, 807 not SBC. If you are curious about codes that may be listed as unknown PM VIN and email address for a copy of MB datacard.

The reason there's a 10-yr warranty is because MB got on Bosch's case for all the niggling problems and got them to put their money where their mouths are. If it were a safety issue, there would be recalls more comprehensive than those issued to date, which were just for nuts and bolts and connectors kinds of things.

The major recalls on the units didn't apply for 06. The only thing for the 06 cars were the ground wires and bracket (see below).
Recall Campaign 2005070007 APR06
Inspect SBC hydraulic unit, replace as directed
E / SL (2004)
Recall Campaign 2005110001 APR06
Installation of ground wires and bracket to SBC wiring harness
E (2003-2006) / CLS (2006) / SL (2003-2005)
Recall Campaign 2004050014 OCT04
Programming SBC hydraulic unit
E / SL (2003-2005)
Agree about the two birds with one stone theory as well. They saved money and got rid of something that was causing bad rep. Also agree with Barry, it is much safer this way now.

Thank you all, especially konigstiger, for taking interest in my dilemma. Earlier today I replaced the front brakes – pads and all the hardware that came in the kit. It was really easy, no extra precautions were taken. Everything is in place now but I haven’t tightened the caliper bolts yet. Does anybody know what torque spec is?.

Sort of. Its part of the EBD/ABS system which the ESP control module uses as one of its outputs. That IS where the old SBC pump was tho, that is not an SBC pump. So glad they got rid of that crap... altho lexus still uses it.

so rang merc in m/k back to blackpool ... said good will so then towed there ... two bills ... during repairs told brake caliper nut stuck so need new one .....
cost £390 196 +131 labour ...... well stung ...... i rang preston gave same price but said get brakes done and same time .... why when nothing wrong
conning money out of people ... labour was £160 per hour steep ...... but i did get car back on road .... i guess proves merc have to pay ... but this is a deadly
