Got my E55 Yesterday!
20 years I've been aspiring to own a Merc and finally I've attained it. It's a low milege 2004 model and the power is stunning!
Of course I have to start modding it now so I was thinking of air filters initially going with K&N, apparently it's +15 HP if you replace both filters.
Odd question, I popped the hood and I couldn't find where the air filters are located? How do I get to them and remove them?
Anyway couldn't be happier, it's a stunning ride! I call it a "Banker's Hot Rod."

Wonderful thanks guys. I just use the standard allen wrench to remove the airbox and access the filters correct?
I drive 100 miles every day to and from work so it's been a thrill to have such a fantastic ride upgrading from a Dodge Durango.

1. Like others have said...you need two.
2. 15hp is pretty optomistic...but upgrading filters still should help.
3. Best bang for your buck is a stage 1 product (Kleeman, VRP, LET, etc...) which is usually bigger pulley and ECU tune.
4. Heat soak is a biatch so prepare for that...(upgrade the HE and make sure your IC pump is operating properly)
5. Unsprung weight is something to think of...(lighter wheels and rotors)
6. Drive it around for awhile and get used to it then mod...that way you have a solid baseline butt dyno to work with (and get a real baseline dyno).
Enjoy and be safe...
PS If it is relatively low miles (below 50K...mine is 04 and only has 33K), I would suggest getting an extended warranty, too. At the very least, find a independent certified ASE MB mechanic in your area. Luckily, there are several in my area that have left MB to start there own shop...usually a 1/3 to 1/4 savings in labor.

All,
Yes great advice since I live in Phoenix AZ and heat soak will be an issue. It's cooling down now but will be a challenge in the summer.
Regarding the extended warranty yes I got that as well, 5 years or 60K miles on top of what I have and only a $50 "co-pay" for most everything or $75 at the dealer. I got the car through Car Max and it is low miles 30K range.
On the IC (Intercooler?) I have no idea what the means and perhaps you could link me to your recommended "Heat exchanger" upgrades?
Thanks again.

The heat exchanger upgrade kit I got was through VRP but you can get it through Evosport or LET (I believe)...it is usually accompanied with a upgraded IC pump and larger heat exchanger core. There was a Ebay seller that was selling what seemed to be a possible upgrade heat exchanger but I don't have personal experience with it.

Thanks very much. Yes regarding the HP improvement with K&N Filter's that's what they listed but realistically I"m sure it's much lower. Still it will help as I'm sure the standard cloth filters aren't as efficient.
Regarding the pump I just found what you're referring to here: http://autoperformanceengineering.com/html/jabsco.html Should I go with the 12v or or 24v?
I've already encourtered this issue but thought I was doing something wrong on the computer was lowering the engine output because I hammered it a few times in a row. (Hey I just got the thing!)
I'll but the new pump today via the link but just need to know if I should go with the 12v or 24v.
Thanks very much!

Oh by the way got my plate picked out...ready...?
"GONEIN5"
And the beauty is GONEIN4 is also available but I'll have to do some mods first to "earn" that plate.
So summarizing I plan to do the following mods right away based on your collective recommendations:
- K&N Airfilters
- IC Pump upgrade
- Heat Exchanger
- Remove the rubber beneath the wiper blades that traps heat in the engine bay
All told this is $500-$700 bucks which isn't bad. If somebody here could recommend the heat exchanger and point me as to where to buy this I'd greatly appreciate it!
Lastly if there are any other, easy, straight forward, faily inexpensive "must do" mods for a new E55 owner I'm all ears.
Thanks very much.

Hey man you're still around
Now in San Francisco, going home tonight..
Stll got the wagon, but the aftermarket warranty is running out in a few months so I have to make a decision..
Too bad MB does not make an E-Wagon with the diesel engine, would buy one in a flash.
How are you? Married with bambinos now?
