E240(03) Transmission Problems

Hi Guys,

I’m new to the forums so I apologise in advance if I have posted this in the wrong place.

I recently had some work done on my E240(03) - Rear Springs were replaced, Central Gateway replaced, ECU problems. Its been about two weeks since my car was repaired however I am now experiencing another major problem. The transmission only seems to shift into first and second gear -travelling at thirty is excruciating as the car is doing about 3500 revs, 40 @ about 4000 revs. I can get into reverse however on occasions I find moving from reverse into drive doesn’t seem to be registering - car starts to role back. At this point I have to turn of the engine and restart. I cannot change from S to W or use tip tronic system - continually remains in drive. When moving from park to Drive the car jerks forward . The engine management light is also on however the central display shows no malfunction. Could replacing the Central gateway have caused this issue? Has anyone else experienced similar problems. Mercedes advise that they want another £67 for diagnostics however I feel as if the issue could be related to the repair work carried out by them.

Please help
Thanks

It has gone into "safe mode". This is a feature that is intended to get the vehicle to a shop or home. I had this happen on a Chrysler vehicle and I mistakenly assumed that it was not going to be too bad. For whatever reason, the tranny will make that 1-2 upshift in almost any failure. Hopefully, it is not terminal (in my case it was). I don't think this is a problem you can diagnose without some serious garage equipment.

Thanks for the quick response. I have it booked in at merc on Friday, hopefully its something minor. I was wondering if it could be the cold weather I was reading one of the forum posts which stated that the the issue kicked in when it was really cold. The temp has been around -5 in the last few days on top of that its snowing. Ill post the results of the dianostics test as soon as i have them. I've had the car 6 years now - no problems till about two week ago lets hope this is the last of them.

Just got car back after diagnostics. Merc advise that the fault is possibly due to a faulty electronic plate. They qouted £552 . If this repair doesn't ressolve the issue it could be the gearbox ecu which they advise will be even more expensive to replace. The part alone would cost £600+. I contacted my local inde who advise that they would charge £280 all in for elctro plate replacement - excluding valve body. Should the ecu need to be replaced this would cost an additional £215. Seems more reasonable so might go with inde....

In the E we don't get anything smaller than 320/350 engine in the US. I don't have any idea that the 240 engine uses a different tranny but here in the states, the rebuilt ones are about $4000. So even though you have a right to be disappointed, it could have been worse. Some posters have had assistance from MBUSA when failures are pre- mature even when out of warranty. Unless you were ugly to your car, it would appear that the failure is untimely. I can tell you this, I had a co-worker who had a Toyota pickup that experienced a head gasket failure at 176,000 miles and Toyota replaced the entire short block to help them overcome their shame. I don't know why I drive other brands
