Rookie Needs Transmission Help!!

1999 E320 will red line before shifting when it is cold. This occurs even after allowing it to warm up. After it is warm and it goes through a rough start, the car runs well. I just purchased this car and am debating on weather to return it to the seller. Is this common? Should I be concerned or is it readily explainable and/or fixable? Any input is very appreciated! Thanks!

I would check to make sure the tranny fluid level is correct. If it's at the correct level, I would change the tranny fluid and see if that improves the shifting. Most likely the tranny fluid has never been changed.

It is normal for it to rev higher before shifting when cold. Warming up the engine does nothing for the transmission - its fluid is still cold.
