In the older models (W211 anyway)the W selection starts the transmission off in 2 nd gear. This is supposed to decrease wheel spin on slippery surfaces hence "winter" The S or summer mode allows full shifting from 1-5. Here is the US Ford used a similar set up with their "cruise-O-matic" transmission. Some people have debated fuel economy / wear. It is really just personal preferance. The manual advises against changing selection unless the car is in neutral or park.
