Angry Shifted to "R" and car didn't move??

So I started up the car yesterday as usual. Shifted the gear to “R” and trying to back up. The car didn’t want to move so I try it with a little gas. It felt like something is stuck underneath the tire so I went to check and nothing was blocking all four tires. I tried again but no luck. I shifted to “D” and the car could move forward. Then I shifted back to “R” with more gas. The car hesitated for a little then there was this bang noise. It sounded like something is snapped. Nonetheless, the car can move backward and forward now. I am afraid to drive it now. I washed the car the day before and didn’t drive it since. Could it be the rust build up on the rotors?? I highly doubt it.
Talked to my tech last night and he wasn’t sure about this. All he could think of was the SBC brakes? I was thinking if it has anything to do with the gearbox/transmission/transfer case? I have a 2005 E500 4Matic. I don’t know
Please let me know if any of you guys have heard or experienced this. Thanks a lot!

My '07 has been into the shop a half dozen times because when I shift into reverse, ocassionally, the tranny delays a bit (sometimes, up to 7 seconds) before reverse gear engages. Every mechanic has been "unable to reproduce customer's complaint," therefore...no repairs, and the complaint continues. Same began at around 20k miles, and I'm at 52k now.

I recently got the extended warranty, so before 100k miles comes, they'll likely be replacing the entire thing for an approximate $9,000.

Speak with the shop foreman and "suggest" they flash and SCN code the transmission control unit (TCU) then reset adaptation for the reverse clutch.

What about the "bang/snapped" noise that I was referring to? That got me worry.

Ok, it happened again yesterday. Same symptom. Is this like an annual thing?

Seriously, anyone has experienced this before?

Scary. I had a Volvo S60 a long time ago with a similar problem (delay to reverse than a loud "clunk") but I traded it in before I discovered the cause.

No, never. The 'bang/snapped' sound you describe is worrying a bit. A 'clunk' or 'thud' could be an issue with the clutch slipping, or a worn flex disc, etc. However a sharp snapping sound likely means something else.

I would have a dealer look it over fully, scan for codes (active or dormant), change the transfer case oil (it's cheap). At least get it documented at a dealer in case it leads to something worse. Good luck!
