Nav Odds

Post your thoughts.
I know a guy in Nevada that would be happy to pay odds on this event happening in a given time frame. He could probably make more money on this than the Sweet 16, given the emotional content.
2:1 means it is 2 to 1 it will not happen

I don't get it...

Otto,

I don't get your reply... Maybe for some people who drive to the same places and never go anywhere new, it is a completely superfluous and silly feature. I'd be perfectly happy saying that some people find it wonderful and some people can't justify the expense.

Personally, I first had Nav in my car a little over three years ago. Prior to that, whenever I went somewhere new, I either fumbled with maps (of which I either carried around dozens of city street maps, or carried a bulky Thomas Guide), or rushed around just before I left trying to get a Mapquest map printed out. Or if I was out with friends, and there was a change of plans, we would waste time with stupid directions put through obscure people filters ("First turn right at rock that look like bear... then make left at bear that look like rock..." - apologies to the Heckawee chief from F-troop...) We'd waste time... and get lost anyway because the Bowl-a-rama closed last month and noone noticed...

Now, I just get in the car... don't give me directions... just a city and address... or restaurant name... I punch it in while driving and it is a tremendous time-saver...

I will not ever buy a new car without it. The reason I want the MB-factory installed one is simple: Neat, clean installation... no fumbling with wires or laptops or anything. Plus, it is (supposed to be) well integrated into all the other systems in the car.

The two things that I do not see in nav systems that should be there (forget the silly three-d birds' eye view silly features...) are: 1. The traveling salesman problem... I often have several places I need to go... several addresses, and the order is unimportant. I want to visit each and not have to think about the order. (Think about it: this would be the real estate dude's favorite feature - he wants to bring his client to six different places without backtracking too much. and 2. I want to be able to master my own cd/dvd nav rom. I admit that the rom often has places in it that I am surprised to find... but I like to visit wineries in Napa and Sonoma... I would like to cut a dvd that has an extra catagory of places... wineries... and program in all the addresses to all the wineries... It would be a great and easy feature to do. Heck, just make the rom lists of places human readable...

Well... those are my thoughts, and those are also the reasons why I will not be buying an E500 unless I can get it with the dvd-nav in July. It's the best option in any car you can buy today.

If you think it's silly, or gadgety, or show-offey, then I can only say one thing... you haven't had one or used it long enough to understand. I will not buy another car without an integrated nav system. Period.

hope everyone have fun

I like all responses

all realtors I know whose cars do not have nav but she/he shows me the house locations in her/his "territory" quickly. (most of new houses having new addresses that cannot be shown up with an out of date dvd data; most of local address cases are -- the time you spend inputting address, you have arrived there.) Don't frame me -- I do like nav but please enjoy the reasons and laugh loudly and enjoy the coming mb nav. (all the car forums you can see the same syndrome -- some members defend their cars better than those car makers, even for a lousy product.)

all cars from delivery companies, e.g. USPS, UPS, FDX, etc. , do NOT have these gears but they can arrange the best routes everyday.

I think the persons really need this feature are the "marketing" representatives who need to visit the new clients but I doubt how many of us having this kinds of jobs, especially, driving the same roads from home to work. (finally, honestly ask yourself the REAL reason that you must have nav.)

Otto says:

You're implying that we must have nav for the same reason some people must have an MB... status, bragging rights, whatever... this is dumb.

Certainly this is true for some people, but your statement is ridiculous... this is like saying why can't all people just live life simply, in a log cabin by Walden Pond like Thoreau... Well they can... but if they choose not to, then there's lots of reasons why this is awesomely great technology which saves time.

I don't care if you're driving a Hyundai... If you can buy a GPS nav system for it for less than $1500 then unless you either drive to the same places all the time, or you have a very small area of the world which you know very well, YOU BUY IT... if you go anywhere further than 25 miles from your home, then it is worth every penny.

I know an 87 year old woman who spent most of her life within 1 mile of her house... when she has to go to the "Big town" about 7 miles away, she hates it. GPS for her and anyone else like her is of course absurd... For just about the rest of us, GPS is the first new feature in a long, long time that should become standard in every single automobile... It is not a fru-fru-frilly option for the excessively weathly and idle rich, who like silly toys.

My advice: Get one and USE it for 3 months... if you still don't get it after that, try venturing a little further away from your neighbor once in a while... you need to get out more often.

NavNut,

You are a reasonable person (instead of instinctively called me "blind" -- I cannot help myself stop laughing, first, blind cannot see your mail, secondly, blind do not need to drive car at all but blind may need nav because blind can take directions from a disembodied femal voice. )

I don't know Hyundai but the last time when I drove mazada mx6 as a loaner car, it mades me thought mb and bmw should improve their quality for matching their value -- I have a new e but like all other new e owners, we do not have nav so far.

I have no problem using a map if I venture a new place. Of couse, nav can direct me while driving. For a long trip, my cars have to park in the garage -- they cannot go with me to foregin countries.
(how does nav work in different languages??? how to enter an address for other languages???)

Again, I totally agree you should wait for you new e with nav and I think nav is a great tool for all people who need it. I did not say go and live log cabin by the lake. I do want everyone enjoy the new technology and improve life quality. I merely want people to think the necessity of having nav. (of course, nav more useful than distonic but do not frame me, I just talk my case because I don't have a chance to use my cruise control at all.)

mb produce more than 200,000 w211 worldwide without nav. (shame on mb) I don't see most of owners think it must have -- it is good to have.
