Just looks like black plastic on my E500.
My kid's Focus has some sort of fabric lining in the rear wheel wells. I guess it cuts the road noise a bit but it's tough to clean if they have been through any muddy areas.

Thank you. I agree it's very hard to clean , leaves and small twigs get stuck in the stuff especially in the rain and are almost impossible to take out. It's nice to know that my $60,000 MB shares the same stuff as a Ford Focus...
