E320 cdi exhaust question.
Hey all I'm looking to pick up a 2005/2006 E320 CDI soon within the next 2 months. I've been doing a lot of research lately but heres one thing I couldn't find.
With the E320 CDI what does it sound like when you put a straight pipe exhaust on after the cat? Is it loud? Do you hear the turbo more?
My experience with VW TDIs is they barely increase in noise but you get that nice turbo spooling sound.

I wouldn't imagine a diesel e klasse to be high up on the tuner scene of cars to molest..... but good luck none the less.
As for the turbo, just roll the window down when you are in a parking garage and you can hear it just fine

Not looking to molest it or rice it out or something. Not my style I'm into VIP styled cars although I would never waste my money on doing stuff like that.
I just wanted to know what it would sound like. If it's too loud at idle or theres a drone when cruising on the highway then forget it.

Well, sort of. They have dual mufflers. However the 2 mufflers are fed from a Y-pipe that comes from a single, larger diameter pipe, coming from the particulate trap/catalyst. It's really only a single exaust, which makes sense considering it's an inline 6 with a turbo.
That being said, there are a couple of clips on You Tube with CDI's that have various different exhausts and they sound quite mean. Certainly something I've considered myself.
My Brother and I recently removed the muffler from his VW Jetta TDI and it hardly made any difference at all. I was quite surprised. You could just remove them and see how it sounds as typically the Turbo and the Cat do sufficient muffling.

Mine is a 2005 W-211 CDI. It did not come with a particulate trap.
And I like it like that. If someone is following me to closely, I can
'stand-on-it' and all of a sudden, I cannot see them any longer
and they 'back-off'. That is unless I have done that within the
last 50 miles. Guess the soot builds up in the pipes?
Removing the two rear mufflers saves about 37 pounds too.
Drove it more than a year and finally told my wife;
She has sensitive ears, but had not noticed.
Cannot hear the turbo which is disappointing.
If you do that, be sure to angle the pipes downward at 45
degrees and have the ends slightly past the rear edge of
the bumper. If you do not, the sound will come into the
car via the trunk cavity.
It can be a little annoying at between 2250 and 2400 rpm,
so an excuse to drive faster or slower.
Those revs must be where the torque is the highest.
Mine dynoed at 384-386 RWTQ, 211 RWHP.
Those readings prior to pulling the mufflers.
Really surprised me and the rest of the fellows at the
TDI gathering. Good sound for only $70.
Funny, when we did the same to the '10 TDI Sportwagen, you
could hear the turbo, but not with the CDI.

A Stocker
Yes indeed, it is stock or at least was when we dynoed it. It's Not Chipped.
Since then, the rear mufflers have been taken off, but I do not think
that really helped except for the car loosing about 37 pounds.
Figure it will run 14.9 ET and around 91-92 mph in the quarter which
makes it quicker and faster than my '95 Impala SS back when I first
bought.
Not bad for a small (3.222 L) straight six (under 200 cu/in) when
compared with an LT1 350 Chevy.
And of course the SS would not get the high F E that the older
CDIs do get. That is why I simply love it!
