Searched - Rear Sunshade Inoperable

Really appreciate this site in trying to help my old man with his '03 E500. Despite the doomsday prediction on '03s, he has really enjoyed the car for almost 70k miles (bought it with 54k, now almost 120k. This site has been helpful for all the minor issues...

Question today is:

Power rear sun shade fails to extend. He can hear the motor running for its desired time, but the shade doesn't move. I'd say Motor and Switch are ok? New shade is $700-$1000 - anyone else repair similar issue without replacing the entire assembly??

Thanks!

Update, "pulling / tugging" the unit allows it to freely extend. The motor appears to be completely disconnected from the shade assemble. Thanks!!"

Try tugging on it a couple of times it “may” clear if not, PM email address and I will send instructions for removal/inspection to determine if replacement needed.

His mama. Traded y0 mama in because she was squeaking.
If you can hear the motor running, I'd consider the gears may be stripped. Even if it's one stripped gear tooth in the right position where it just doesn't make contact with the other gear(s).

As suggested before, try tugging on it and see if you can move it.

Can you send me the instructions for removal/inspection too? I sent you a PM. I would really appreciate it.

I tried doing this, removing the rear head rest is a nightmare. I was able to repair the motor. The motor's bearing cap was the problem. If it got lose from the motor housing, the motor shaft move therefore it gets stuck. To find out if your bearing cap is lose, you will notice the shaft on bottom of the housing sticking out by 1/2".

Take out the gears (two gears) and push that shaft back in then plug in the motor and it will run. When the motor has load, the gears will try to push the shaft back therefore it'll get stuck again.

My sunshade was dead and dealer quoted $1,500 for part and $600 labor. Found a new one (sealed in plastic), updated motor on eBay for $230. Porsche dealer installed it for $270.

I see the eBay seller has additional ones.
