E50? (Its not what you think)
I was reading the W211 page on this site, www.ollihart.de, and noticed that it lists an E50 CDI AMG. Yet I cannot find this on www.jes-mercedes.de or any other Mercedes site. Is there a confirmation on that model?
I know there's the C220 CDI Coupe and the planned CLK270 CDI Coupe - but those are not actually AMG models.

Ive seen references to AMG developing a higher powered diesel in the press over the last 6 months.
Remember us in Europe have very high quality diesel, and some serious diesel engines as a result. The 400 diesel appears in the ML, S and presumably others here and because it has *so* much torque is meant to be a pleasure to drive.
As Im in the UK, they dont actually sell the 400 diesel here in anything, so I wouldnt actually know if it is a pleasure to drive - happy to stick with the V8 5.0 and the 5.5 AMG derivative :-)

Info on upcoming AMG Diesel!
This was printed in the February issue of European Car:
"AMG is also working on a 217-bhp 3.0 liter five-cylinder turbo-diesel motor, based on next year's upgraded 270 CDI motor... But diesel engine development cost are substantially higher, and production costs of a diesel engine are nearly double that of a gas unit. The future of the first AMG oil-burner project depends on projectecd sales volume."

Didn't think there would be one, either. (Not that it matters for the U.S., but it's something to think about.)
Richard - Yes, I am aware of the ML400 CDI, the S400 CDI, the G400 CDI, and soon the E400 CDI. Those must be some excellent diesels. I heard rumors (which were later discounted) that the S400CDI and E400 CDI would come to America, so they must obviously be good.
E55 Kev - Any word as to what classes that engine might be introduced into? Or would that become the actual replacement for the 270 CDI, as your quote mentions?
If there was a true AMG diesel model (i.e. with a two-digit model number)...well that would be interesting.

Hey cjileong,
you stated:
"the S400CDI and E400 CDI would come to America, so they must obviously be good."
Of course these engines are good. However, sending these diesel cars to the U.S. is not a matter of quality it is a marketing decision. The Mercedes diesels no matter how good do not sell well in the U.S. market.

E55 Kev-
I agree with you regarding the diesels. Marketing has always been a problem with Mercedes diesels here (though strangely there are two such cars on my street, a 300SDL and a 300SD.).
Plus there's the issue of getting the diesels through proper governmental authorities. I remember reading before that it would be near-impossible to import current Mercedes diesels through the DOT and EPA.
