E320 fuel tank problem
Hi All -- Does anyone have any recommendations on what to do with an apparent cracked fuel tank on a 2003 E320? The dealer tells me this is a fairly common problem and that the main mounting bolt on the top of the tank stresses the plastic of the tank and causes cracks. The new tank is $1100 and they want $720 to R&R as basically the whole rear suspension, the driveline and the exhaust system have to be removed.
On a brighter note, the dealer is recommending a trans service every 40K!

Of course I just crossed over the 90K mile mark! Just my luck. I am researching various compounds that might work to repair it. If I find anything I will post what I find. Thanks.

Since dealer mentions common problem and EPC (MB parts catalog) shows tank part # 2114704201 installed at production replaced by 2114700502, replaced by 2114702502 (replacement usually indicates modification) request the service manager put you in touch with the MBUSA Service and Parts Operations Manager (SPOM) to approve a goodwill replacement. If you want a VIN specific part printout to support your claim private mail VIN & email address – your call.
