Sirius cutting out

My Sirius radio started losing it's signal intermittently about 6 months ago. It used to keep it when going under an underpass or such. Now, every freeway underpass causes it to lose signal for a few seconds. It happens about 5 seconds after the underpass. Sometime it seems to happen for no reason.

Does anyone know the reason or if it's a Sirius problem or an MB one?

Thanks,
Kirk

I had the same problem while testing the service. I have since decided not to use the built-in receiver and to use my portable xm receiver instead. Dealer told me the system checked out and was working to specifications.

I've got the same thing going on since new ('07). Low profit margin in repair, so they never find the problem.

My '09 E350 is going in (again) for Sirius reception next week. Mine sometimes loses signal after a rain and my favorite channel 90 MSNBC loses the signal every 5 minutes on the open road. We'll see what they "find" this time.

On another note - I have my bass set to max and treble to min and the sound still sounds like a cheap radio. They said there's nothing they can do for that.

The interesting thing is I thought it was Sirius that was providing the bad quality sound. I road in my brothers Chevy and the Sirius sounded great and had no drops in the signal while driving under an overpass.

I've had the Sirius tuner replaced in two cars for this problem under warranty. Replacement fixes the problem.

Does anyone know where the antenna connection(s) are? Under the dash or in the trunk?

The tuner with the antenna connection is in the electronics compartment in the floor of the trunk against the back seat.

SDARS unit & antenna connections are located behind passenger-side trunk panel

Sorry for the mis-information above. I was thinking of the Voice Control module.

I believe almost all the GM products use XM. I know Sirus and XM are the same company now but they are still broadcasting individually.

I had the same problems with the factory Sirius in my 06 C280 4Matic. In my case I had two options: 1) allow MB to service and reconnect the tuner, or 2) replace the tuner. I opted for #1 for $100.00 (tuner is located in the dash) which worked until it rained heavily and my Sirius stopped again. After a week or so without rain it restarted by itself; this happened several times. Option #2 costs over $1K so IMO option #2 was not worth the expense. Shortly thereafter I traded the car which is the ultimate solution. I have Sirius in all four of my current cars and have had no problems.

Sirrius Cutting out

Depending on where you live, the Satellite radio will cut out. Some large metro area have Sirius has terrestrial radio towers. Your Satellite radio will pick up the strongest signal and use that has the primary signal. I was recently in the LA and had no problems receiving Sirius; but in Albuquerque, my Sirius will cut out under any overpass. This is mainly due to the terrestrial radio towers. LA has them, Albuquerque does not.
I have had the Sirius radio cut out during heavy rainstorms. Rain has a tendency to reduce radio signal strength due to the wavelength of the Satellite Signal. If I remember correctly, Sirius satellite is positioned straight above the Dallas area (geo stationary). The Sirius antenna is line of sight antenna, so, depending on your location in the USA, the signal strength can be reduced due to location. Couple this with the terrestrial antenna issue; it is not uncommon to lose satellite radio during bad weather and driving under over passes.

Yeah, in LA my satellite radio works fine (kicks off only once in a while under a few tunnels) but up on the central coast, it kicks off a lot. I know mine works fine (since it's no problem in LA) so there's nothing the dealer could do to remedy it. Cell phone coverage is worse up the coast, too. Wealthy NIMBYs don't want towers blocking their ocean views, so everybody has to put up with spotty service.

I have slight hissing in the backround of my Sirius in my BMW and I've heard it in other cars as well...does anyone notice any hissing in the back of songs, particularly more quiet/slower songs?

Finally got my car back from the dealer after 3 days for the Sirius cutting out. First they tried changing the Control Module - no luck. The they over nighted a new Sirius receiver which did the trick - everything works fine now.

The dealer didn't activate the new Sirius receiver??? That took me 30 minutes on the phone with Sirius technical service to switch the account over to the new receiver. Then the Sirius rep. pissed me off by wanting $15 to transfer the account to the new receiver. They didn't seem to care it was the same car under warranty. We finally agreed to $5 but I'm happy to finally have a fully functioning sat. radio again.

Another reason why I prefer XM over Sirius (even though they are combined now....still separate when signing up). XM will work with you on a good deal, the best I got was $62 for full service for a full year. Sirius will nickel and dime you on everything, and the best I have now is $9.99 per month and thats the music only package, and some channels don't come with it. Plus the sound SUCKS compared to XM, huge difference to my ears, and I have both XM and Sirius.

Los Angeles area Sirius Radio signal loss on Radio Classics and MSNBC only. The radio cuts in and out while driving on the streets, freeways or just sitting at a traffic signal. A message pops up on the bottom of the NAV no service or a separate box pop us stating no service. The dealer states all the software has been update and to wait a couple of months to see if any new software will be released.
Sirius support recommends that I have the antenna changed.

Confirm dealer installed current satellite receiver part 2118706790 either documented on invoice or inspect by removing right side trunk panel. If part is current, contact SIRIUS to confirm receiver firmware update (as of MY08 normally remedied over the air and embedded in programming). Due to ongoing transmission testing activities, interruptions may occur in certain channels – around 35 of the total channels may experience interruptions.

There are about 35 stations that will lose the satellite signal because of the bandwidth after the merger of XM and Sirius. MB Service Bulletin for Model Year 2009 authorizes the replacement of the unit if there is loss of signal on any of the stations on the list.
I had my unit replaced by the local dealer today. There is no loss of signal now on MSNBC.
