Steering Noise

Hello,

Is it normal for the steering to squeel when turned all the way on a E500? This noise occurs either counter or clockwise. It makes a constant squeel noise when held all the way to the end of the rotation.

Thanks...

Two points:
1). My E500 sure doesn't do or make this noise.
2). It can't be normal.

Guess you have to go see your pals at the MB Service dept.

Our E500 does not make the squeeling noise. But, it makes a cracking sound when turned close to the lock both right and left. I have had it in once and they replaced a part but no avail. It is going back in this week. We will see.

does the noise happen on smooth/level surfaces or over bumps or dips (like leaving or entering a drive way). Mark

Thanks for the replies. I checked it again today and I can't accurately describe the noise but it only occurs when the engine is still cold. After it is fully warmed, the sound is none existant. I tested the steering noise on a smooth and clean surface. Please test your steering when the engine is first turned on in the morning or before it is fully warmed up and turn the steering all the way to either direction and hold the steering to the end and listen with your window down. I hear like this noise that I really can't describe (maybe a hissing sound?) and will not go away until I turn the steering wheel away from the maximum point.

Thanks for all yor help!

Sounds to me like nothing is wrong. If it only happens while you're holding the steering to the max (at the "stops" so to speak), I'd say you're just hearing the strain on the power steering pump. Mark
