My 2004 E320 is now to about 82,000 miles. Drove out to Vegas with my wife late last week. Air temps on the way ranged from 105 to 116 F. We drove anywhere between 75 and 90 mph.
We had the air conditioning fully on the entire way, hills or no hills. I loved the fact that engine temp was never a problem. Up hills under some strain the temp went up to 90 C. Going down hills the temp would drop1-2 bars below 90 C.
It was great. Had fun driving, in complete comfort. In a car that's now no spring chicken!

+1. I concur with Vik888. If there were massive fluctuations, then I'd be worried. Originally Posted by Vik888

Engine coolant temperature should never exceed the 100*C mark. If the temperature does exceed the 100*C mark, radiator fans should engage to keep it consistently below 100*C. Lastly, this should only happen if you are sitting in stop and go traffic for long periods of time.
