I have a 2005 e500 4matic with under 20k miles on it. The dealer claims that the egr tube needs to be changed. I have never heard of an egr tube and suppose it's an emissions component. The extended dealership warranty claims it will not cover this either. I thought that all emissions components for any car had 10 year warranties on them. Can anyone assist please?

Not all emission components are covered under the emission warranty -- usually just the PCM, cat coverters, and OBD2 connections/data transfer. Newer cars, if covered by the California emission warranty mandates (and other states who follow CA's emission laws) will have much more covered.
Anyway, the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve is a component that allows some exhaust gases to enter into the cylinder to reduce the cylinder temperature (to below 2500 def F) so excessive oxides of nitrogen aren't formed that the cat converter can't handle. There's a tube that connects the EGR valve to the exhaust system and the output of the valve connects to the intake manifold. Actually, replacing this tube is fairly easy if you wanted to DIY. These tubes can corrode and crack/break.
Attached is a parts diagram for an E320 to give you an idea. See item #35.
