469hp my big toe - that's the SAME exact engine as in the SL55 and S55 which both rate (per MB) at 493hp. Gee, I wonder if they are giving a lower 'rate' for the SAME engine in the E55 so it doesn't hurt sales of the S55 or SL55. I bet if someone checked, they would be a lot more similar in output than MB says they are. I'm sure exhaust is different, and they've tried to limit it somewhat, but I bet you could easily get 493 from that without any mods.

Its been discussed in the E55 Forum, the reason for the lower HP rating is that the E55 (supposedly) loses its HP from a longer and therefore more restrective exhaust then compared to the SL55. Makes you wonder how the S55 makes 493HP though and its an even longer car then the E.

One might only conclude that MB wants the SL55 to be King of the Hill for now. More likely just de-rated the E55 motor to satisfy the ego of SL55 owners, buyers and prospects. 
Gee, I really wonder what motivates people to buy such cars here in NA other than for bragging rights. Can't think of any public roads to enjoy the speed and handling these cars are capable without getting into trouble with the law.

'03 E500
Just saw the Car and Driver special with the 03 E55, and I just thought "wow". The performance must be incredible with that thing. C&D estimated the MSRP at 74000. Not too bad.
Maybe after my 500 is up, I'll pick up an AMG.

As a happy owner of the adequately-powered E500 (though I've never had more than 2 pax in the car so far), I'm definitely looking forward to the AMG track day in the Poconos on 09 May to see how the W211 E55, S55, and SL55 compare.
In the northeast generally, and certainly in NYC, you don't find enough room to let any of these cars really stretch their legs, but when it's time to pass the E500 hasn't had any problems, and I've hardly gotten near 3500 rpm :-)
