Question 2004 E-Class Diesel to be sold in California?

In the May issue of Car and Driver magazine, it says MB will bring the diesel E-Class back to the US market for 2004. However they make no mention of whether or not it will be sold in emissions-strict California. I hope they don't sell them here, I hate working on diesels

Dave-
Whats your issue with diesels? Also, is this going be the E400 (I think this is the model I recall hearing about, a 4 liter V-8)?

Thanks

Hopefully diesel fuel is still sold, so diesel E can be purchased in Nevada.

It's going to be a 3.2 liter six-cylinder. Diesel oil is so black and dirty, whenever I work on a diesel I'm filthy from head to toe. You can't help it, it gets everywhere.

No way. And it will not be sold in the 4 other states that adopt the CA emissions model, like NY and MASS. It will be a 45 state car.

I'm with you Dave. My 240D was totaled last year and I haven't missed it for one second. I know there are a fair number of hard core diesel folks out there, and I don't want to offend them, but I just don't see the attraction. Most gas cars get very good mileage these days. My E430 gets the same mileage as my 240D did, for gosh sakes!

Diesel drivers are a fanatical bunch. Those who have them, love them and will drive them for hundreds of thousands of miles. Those who don't have them, don't see the attraction.

I find it extremely hard to imagine that your E430 got the same mileage as your 240D, 25 MPG on the highway.

Anyways..I wouldnt say that I am fanitical about my diesel, I like it because it is relatively cheap to maintain (although diesel fuel quality has gone done recently, causing the glow plugs to be replaced more often), it was cheaper to purchase and gets amazing mileage, especially on the highway. The current diesels arent the same as the old 240 and 300D's, not as loud or dirty and have pretty good pickup. The 98-99 TD's did 0-60 in 8.5, not bad.

Just my thoughts

nyca is correct, the diesel version will not be sold in California at first, but there are plans in the works to modify the car to meet CA and other emission unfriendly states, so they can be sold.

My take on the diesel is from the old 300D and Tubrodiesel, that were loud and sounded as if they were about to explode. I respect the car's durability and had a chance to view an accident that involved a 300D. The car was broadsided by box van doing about 50 mph. You could see all the fluids on the ground, but yet the engine was still running, it took the EMT's about 20 mins to get the car to shut off. It was truly a testiment to the car's "Never Say Die" attitude.

Turbo2, I owned my 240d for about 100K miles. The highest mileage I got was 28.9. The average was about 26. With almost 38K on the E430, we typically average 28+ on long trips, the highest ever was 29.2, and on the same routes and the same traffic as I drove the 240D we average 26. The worst tank ever was 20.2. When I bought it I was just hoping to avaerage the same as the 300TE we traded, which was around 21. The E430 has been quite a surprise (in a good sense). Oh, my averages are actual calculations at each fillup, not educated guesses. I usually try to fill at the same station when I'm local. Balance that against the fact that diesel in the states I have lived in (California and Virginia) has been about 5-10 cents/gallon higher than premium and the atrocious "HP per cubic inch of engine compartment space taken" up ratio (my own term that translates into the 240D being awful to work on compared to any of the six gas Mercedes I have owned) and I rest my case.

Well said, I wasnt trying to get on your case, I was just suprised that you only got aroun 28MPG with the Diesel and same with the 430. Im glad your happy with it, Im not going argue with you about diesels and being dirty to work on, no one can deny that.

More to diesels than fuel consumption and long lived engines. My 91 300TE is turning 150k and I just did the major tune up. God, all that stuff I never had to buy for the 1987 300D and 1982 300CD like distributor cap, spark plug wires, spark plugs, rotors, and more. Just put oil in the damn diesels and they keep on motoring along.

I miss my 87 300d even with the crummy head. One day I'll find a 1987 300TD and put one of those twin cam diesel motors in it from a 1995 W124 sedan

For most uses, diesel are the best engines available for today's drivers. The offer very good mileage and performance, are quieter and cleaner than diesels of the past. In Europe they power about 50% of all new vehicles sold. Engines complying to strict Euro 4 emission regulation have started to arrive to European showrooms, some of them polluting even less than their gasoline counterparts, They profit from new technologies such as FAP filter developed by PSA (Citroen-Peugeot), that effectively reduce harmful gases by a special microfiltering process.

Americans, do not beware and prepare to enjoy the evolution of diesels!

I was very much in the mould of mbtech*** diesel engines were for smelly lorrys and London Taxis.

However the age of the steam engine has passed and engine technology has progressed. As previously stated a large proportion of cars sold in Europe are now diesel powered. You can even get a VW Golf GTi Diesel. If they were 'black, dirty, smelly things' then I cannot imagine young ladies dressed in their best clothes wanting anything to do with the car or its refuelling. Diesel fuel no longer has that strong 'diesel' smell. When my car starts up first thing on a very cold morning it has a slight scenty type smell. I assume there might be an additive, but it also a a very advanced catalytic convertor.

I am far from a died in the wool diesel 'anarak' but technological advances must be accepted and aqlso appreciated.

As my father once said, "Don't knock it, until you try it." (whenever that will be)

All the best,
John

I currently own an 83 240D and still running strong after 21 years and >260K miles. We got it not because we loved diesel engines, but because it was a beautiful car back then. In fact, like most of you, I find diesel cars a hassle to own. First, it is hard to find fuel for it, and secondly, they are quite dirty to work on. Another thing is that they are so loud, vibrate a lot, and don't have much power (at least the 240D). In any case, I don't regret buying it because they are so durable, reliable, and built like a tank. The sheetmetal on my old benz feels stronger than my new W211 E320. The chassis is also very rigid, and has very very rattles, if any.

Regarding gas mileage, you need to compare a newer diesel car (say like a W210 diesel car) to it's normal gas version to see how fuel efficient they are. I recall that the W210 diesel (forgot if it was a 300D or 320D) got well into the 40 mpgs. There was a nice article on them in C&D. You won't get that on an E320 or E430.

In Europe there are a number of different 'shops' that sell 'chips' that increase the HP of these engines and really give them some va va vroom.

In the recent Golf GTi Championships a diesel one a number of races. Same size engine as the other competitors, but diesel powered.

The 320CDI has ample performance without 'chipping' but if you want more power there is always the 400CDI.

Well, my E220CDI - obviously a diesel has a mileage of 35-40 on highway! City it's higher of course. And btw... I buy a diesel to drive it, not to work on it so I don't care if a mechanic gets more dirty or not.

I think it is not about liking it or not - a diesel simply is way more efficient than an engine powered with regular fuel. And the torque... a dream.

But it's (basically) a free world. If you don't like diesel, don't buy one. If you don't like to work on it - change your profession. Simple, isn't it

You're itching for to swap your E320 for an E320 CDI aren't ya?

I love the fact that they are introducing the new E-Class diesels, I just wish we had that European spec fuel here already. That would boost sales of diesels by far!

BTW, anyone here know that Mobil will be selling Mobil 1 Truck and SUV oil in 5w40 at Walmarts around the country. It's Delvac 1 rebadged for you diesel folks that know. Read this on a TDIClub forum last night... It's even on the ExxonMobil website.
