2004 E-Class Diesel to be sold in California?
Dave-
Whats your issue with diesels? Also, is this going be the E400 (I think this is the model I recall hearing about, a 4 liter V-8)?
Thanks

Anyways..I wouldnt say that I am fanitical about my diesel, I like it because it is relatively cheap to maintain (although diesel fuel quality has gone done recently, causing the glow plugs to be replaced more often), it was cheaper to purchase and gets amazing mileage, especially on the highway. The current diesels arent the same as the old 240 and 300D's, not as loud or dirty and have pretty good pickup. The 98-99 TD's did 0-60 in 8.5, not bad.
Just my thoughts
My take on the diesel is from the old 300D and Tubrodiesel, that were loud and sounded as if they were about to explode. I respect the car's durability and had a chance to view an accident that involved a 300D. The car was broadsided by box van doing about 50 mph. You could see all the fluids on the ground, but yet the engine was still running, it took the EMT's about 20 mins to get the car to shut off. It was truly a testiment to the car's "Never Say Die" attitude.
I miss my 87 300d even with the crummy head. One day I'll find a 1987 300TD and put one of those twin cam diesel motors in it from a 1995 W124 sedan
Americans, do not beware and prepare to enjoy the evolution of diesels!

However the age of the steam engine has passed and engine technology has progressed. As previously stated a large proportion of cars sold in Europe are now diesel powered. You can even get a VW Golf GTi Diesel. If they were 'black, dirty, smelly things' then I cannot imagine young ladies dressed in their best clothes wanting anything to do with the car or its refuelling. Diesel fuel no longer has that strong 'diesel' smell. When my car starts up first thing on a very cold morning it has a slight scenty type smell. I assume there might be an additive, but it also a a very advanced catalytic convertor.
I am far from a died in the wool diesel 'anarak' but technological advances must be accepted and aqlso appreciated.
As my father once said, "Don't knock it, until you try it." (whenever that will be)
All the best,

nyca is correct, the diesel version will not be sold in California at first, but there are plans in the works to modify the car to meet CA and other emission unfriendly states, so they can be sold.

Good to see you back...:-)
looks like that was an old post dated 4-17-03 from Marcus Benz. Note his logo says "banned." Too bad, I wish we were welcoming back Marcus Benz as well. Have missed his input on these boards.
Regarding gas mileage, you need to compare a newer diesel car (say like a W210 diesel car) to it's normal gas version to see how fuel efficient they are. I recall that the W210 diesel (forgot if it was a 300D or 320D) got well into the 40 mpgs. There was a nice article on them in C&D. You won't get that on an E320 or E430.
It's going to be a 3.2 liter six-cylinder. Diesel oil is so black and dirty, whenever I work on a diesel I'm filthy from head to toe. You can't help it, it gets everywhere.
You know you love rolling in used diesel engine oil! Get on your hands and knees and yell DOOOOOOOODY!!!!!!!!!!!

In the recent Golf GTi Championships a diesel one a number of races. Same size engine as the other competitors, but diesel powered.
The 320CDI has ample performance without 'chipping' but if you want more power there is always the 400CDI.

I find it extremely hard to imagine that your E430 got the same mileage as your 240D, 25 MPG on the highway.
...

I think it is not about liking it or not - a diesel simply is way more efficient than an engine powered with regular fuel. And the torque... a dream.
But it's (basically) a free world. If you don't like diesel, don't buy one. If you don't like to work on it - change your profession. Simple, isn't it
Nice fleet of cars you have there!
You're itching for to swap your E320 for an E320 CDI aren't ya?
I love the fact that they are introducing the new E-Class diesels, I just wish we had that European spec fuel here already. That would boost sales of diesels by far!
BTW, anyone here know that Mobil will be selling Mobil 1 Truck and SUV oil in 5w40 at Walmarts around the country. It's Delvac 1 rebadged for you diesel folks that know. Read this on a TDIClub forum last night... It's even on the ExxonMobil website.
