How to remove upper control panel from housing?

I have a 2005 E500 with keyless go. I need to replace the "upper control panel" button assembly, which includes the heated seat buttons, hazard blinkers, etc.
I am able to remove the entire unit (cd player and all) from the car no problem. But I need to somehow get to the small screws that hold the buttons to the wood face plate. In order to get to the screws the "door" must move somehow. For the life of me I can't get the thing to budge. (and I certainly don't want to crank on it so hard that something breaks!)
I have the MB Star Service DVD Manual for the W211 but the instructions are vague on this point. All it says is "open flap of kinematics stowage compartment as far as possible." Great. How do you get the flap to open? Anyone have any experience with this?
