Going from a 2010 with HID's to a 2011 with HID's, the difference is "night and day". The new lights are much brighter/sharper/whiter/bluer.

Has anyone compiled a list of models covered by the factory (not customized) improvement and whether MB is picking up the tab, eg, for safety purposes?

I know this is an old thread, but can you guys confirm that this upgrade is just a matter of swapping bulbs provided that the car has factory xenon lights? I have an 07 E350 with factory xenons and I do a lot of night driving.

You should be able to change to whatever D1S bulb you want...
I did a projector retrofit replacing the stock crappy h7 projectors to factory bi-xenon e55 projectors which use a D2S bulb and purchased Osram Nightbreakers. Amazing light output from the bulb. I probably won't ever go back to Philips 85112 ever again..lol
Also changing out your lenses to clear from the factory Fresnel would be an improvement.
