Turn Signal Problem

I've done a search in the threads but I can't find any info on the problem I'm having. Any help would be appreciated!!

I've got an 03 E500 my left turn signal will periodically not turn off. It also comes on by itself sometimes. Anyone had a similar problem? Thanks!

The blinker switch in steering column “may” need replacement (MY03 part # 1715402245 for comparison shopping, parts.com $77.05).

Question on that: How hard is it to replace that switch in the steering column? I bought the part. According to the MB Servive rep it wasn't too hard, the parts guy had doom and gloom stories about exploding airbags. I take it the truth is somewhere in the middle, but a little guidance on do's and dont's would be helpful. As far as my skill level goes, I have done the heater valve, the interior fan motor and a rear shock absorber, all without too many issues, except for a busted knuckle or two....

Thanks,
