Silly Sand

Perhaps this is a silly question but other than salt, is it bad to drive the car on the beach or any other environment where there is excessive sand. Is it bad for the differential or anything in the car that makes the wheels turn? i.e. can find finely ground sand seep into any sealed components of the car?
