HELP needed! M273 and OIL 229.51

Hello, MBWorld!

Please advice, I just got my engine oil changed, it originally had 229.5 now it has ARAL Supertronic 0w-40 low SAPs 229.51, I am in panic, should I replace it ASAP? I have E500 MY2007 4Matic, European model, 5.5L M273.

Just read info about 229.5/229.51, did not know about it before.

There is a lot of confusing information on web.

Some says 229.51 for diesel, some says for petrol engines > MY2005 too.

Please help.

Yes. 229.51 is an approved alternate for 229.5. No panic required.

It's a bit like a diode, i.e. any engine requiring 229.5 can use 229.51, but any car requiring 229.51 CANNOT use 229.5. Those would be diesels with diesel particulate filters.

Thank you!

Could you give me a link or some official info please.

according to this document SI18.00-P-0011A (I found on some forum)
http://www.motor-talk.de/forum/aktio...hmentId=580101

in M273 229.51 should not be used.

But I searched forums and found the same information as you give me, that it is OK to use 229.51 in 229.5 engines but not 229.5 in 229.51.

Please let me know if someone used 229.51 in M273 engine.

Just about every MB dealer (in USA) now puts 229.51 in everything (and it's approved).

This is because their automatic oil systems can only hold one type of oil, and since the diesel requirement as detailed above, 229.51 is what it is.

Hello,

I wrote to ARAL Oil company about this situation and got reply
______________
Dear Sir,

thank you for your interest in our products.

Unfortunately we do not have the required 229.5 product for export markets at the moment. This is supposed to come in Q2 2011 and will be named “Aral HighTronic M”.

Please contact your local Aral dealer for more information.

Might you please advice in which country you are living?

please change the oil to avoid damage, please use 229.5 oil !

Best regards, viele Grüße,

Markus Mitchell

So you did panic after all. If you had followed the forum advice (as below, and above), you would have $150 to spend for your wife (not that it would help a lot with that budget).
