I have the same noise on the rear passenger side. The car had an airmatic malfunction at around 500 miles that necessitated the replacement of both front springs and their associated airmatic components. Going to the shop 5/20. I'll let you know.

do you feel a difference in the ride or is it just a noise?

I hear a thunk every time I switch suspension modes. I don't think it's a malfunction.

The noise is a low pitched rattle or thunk and it is occuring in every mode when driving. It seems to be more pronounced when turning right. I thought it may be the cover for the spare but ruled that out by having someone ride in the back seat with one folded down. It is definitely coming from the right rear suspension. Almost sounds like a bad bushing or broken spring/shock mount. Hopefully MB will find it 5/20 when I bring the car in for this and a few other issues.

Just got the car back from two days in the service area. Thunking is from defective rear shock on the passenger side. They are going to replace both rear shocks but the parts will take 10 days because they are backordered and coming from Germany. Also replaced audio gateway due to static and intermittent loss of FM radio signal. So far: new engine mounts, new front struts, new outside temp sensor, new audio gateway, new rear shocks on the way.

a week ago, mb sent 12 or so e55's to the raleigh area for a press demo/shoot or something along with special expert E class tech's with the cars.

i saw a few of them but didn't drive one. very nice. anyway, the tech's noticed a slight bounce in the rear on some of them when test driving. they replaced the rear shocks.

i know this because i have been complaining about a slight rear bounce on freeways that are not very smooth. they are replacing my rear shocks as well on my car because that's what the special tech's did. hope this fixes it.

i'm wondering now if it's not a malfunction but a design problem.
