two points....

1. Any idea if the better fuel efficiency means the gas guzzler tax on the E500 will go away? I think the E500 was only 1Mpg away from being exempt from the gas guzzler tax.

2. Do you think the new tranny will mean a whole new set of reliability issues on a car which should otherwise have a lot of first model year issues resolved?

E500 Wagon Too?

Does anyone know if the new 7speed will be in the E500 4matic wagon in 2004?

Any idea if this will also be on US models? Will this be an extra cost option?

Not Listed as an Option

As of yesterday when I looked at the dealer order guide for the E500 4matic wagon, there was no indication whether the v8 was a 5 or 7 speed. Nor was there any option relating to it. The sedans, of course, have a different order guide, which I didn't consult.

Even though the site is Canadian but the source of the news is Stuttgart, Germany. I guess the 7 speed transmission will be available in US also and will be a replacement, not an option.

here is the actual German text, which perhaps some members can translate better than me with my 2 years of german lessons.

from a German website:
http://www.jes-mercedes.de/indexie.htm

It seems to say that the 7 speed transmission will be out this fall (03)
on the S430, S500, SL500, CL500,
and the E500......

if true, with the 7 speed trans this fall and nav in Feb '04, I may just have to wait (and I hate waiting).

Hoping Against Technology

Well, I put my name down for an E500 4matic wagon before this news came out. A little part of me wants to try the new transmission, but most of me wants to avoid it until it is "tried and tested." I guess time will tell where and when the new transmission appears in the US.

you are doing the right thing, stick with the current gearbox. the transmission is by far the most complicated component on any car.

sometime in 2004 the new 7 speed will be beefed up for the power of the supercharged V-8s and V-12s. There is no clear date as of yet.

V12 and AMGs will not have the 7-speed AT.. just the regular MB V8s for the first year..
