Total loss of engine power while driving....

'04 E500 wagon -- driving along today and the car just quits in the middle of driving -- Managed to get off to the shoulder and car would not start. Of course when MB road side shows up, car starts right up! I get it home and in the drive, car ****s down again! Check engine light on but after two re-starts, goes off. Let it sit in driveway and guess what, reaches temp and STOP -- loss of all power again! Any ideas? Seems that once the car hits 100c - it stops! Cooling fan does not run heavy (runs when on -- but not once car stops). Any ideas? Going to dealer in the am but I mean REALLY what the hell?

Maybe crank position sensor?

Could be a fuel temp sensor , thats what it was on my Land Rover.
Most things that keep the car from running will trip the check engine light and if it did not it still may have stored a code.

Those are the symptoms of a bad Crankshaft Position Sensor.

Check your PM's.

Check - another CPS failure!

Thanks for the quick feedback and yes, it was the CPS. Oddly enough, I found an '07 E350 obsidian black / cashmere with P2 and all the options I know of (including the MB OEM Chrome Wheels-- a little much outside of CA, but we are getting used to them). I have to say, my wife and I loved that e500 but, this E350 is a better car for our everyday use-- 43k miles and just awesome! Our E500 went to RBM North --long Saturday for me but, it all over now!

Yay! I got one right. That almost never happens.

Cooky that you took it for a bad CPS and left with a whole different car.

Congrats on the new ride. I love the Obsidian/Cashmere combo. BTW, I don't believe MB has chrome OEM wheels. They're either replicas, or OEM wheels that were chromed after.

Enjoy her.
