Radio Problem -Possibly AGW

My Radio stopped working on my 2003 E320 last week. Nothing, not even the dispay. I've been researching this forum for about a week and tried all the tricks from everyone including pulling fuse 28 and fuse 6. Also tried disconnecting battery for 20 mins. Talked to my Dealer and said they will run diagnostic for $100 to see what the problem is. He said if its the AGW, it could be expensive. Now I researched people changing their headunit, and I really dont mind not having steering wheel control for volume and radio tuning, but my question is, what is the biggest draw back of exchanging the radio head unit. I dont mind changing the speakers too and a little amp. Also, I would need a double din faceplate right? Who makes them?
