After reading this thread and have done this job on my E320 sedan I decided to go for it on my 2004 E320 estate . I sprayed PB blaster the day before and prior to do the job . I also hit it with heat gun before attempting to loosen the plate and shock . I didn’t get the special tool but used a large channel locks (not good grip ) . The LARGE vice grip did the trick and I was able to turn the shaft 1 full turn before the shaft cracked !

I read a few more people had that happened to them . My advice is get the special tool and don’t risk have the shaft crack on you

anyone that had my luck was able to drill it out successfully?

I know this thread is old, but figured I’d say that after reading the so-so attempts without the tool, I ordered one from the UK for $70 incl. shipping. While I could possibly do the job without the tool, and would love to since I have everything but the tool, I’ll wait a week or so until the tool gets here. I’ll post once I get in there and get the job done!

That tool is the same one I just bought. It’s the only one I could find. That’s okay as I need it for my wife’s S211 as well, so it’ll get used!

I just installed the Bilstein rear semi-active shocks on my ‘04 E500 Wagon and they went in with no issues. The special tool was worth the weight as it made loosening/tightening the top nut really easy and it would have been much more difficult without it.
