Rear climate control display problem

The rear climate control display in my 2004 E500 does not display anything. It functions, as cold air blows just fine. I can still control the temperature via the front control. I also just changed the changeover valve due to hot air coming from the rear vents. I purchased the car about a month ago and it has no warrantee. The display didn't work since I purchased it, but thought it may have been related to the faulty valve, but now that I changed it, it still doesn't display anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Does the unit light up at night? You say it functions like it should but i'm guessing you can see anything on the display?
