Odd Question Re: Steering Wheel in 2008 E350

I recently traded in my 2007 E350 4Matic for a 2008 E350 4Matic and I noticed a difference in the steering wheel when trying to honk the horn. In particular, the 2008 seems to have significant "play" in the center of the steering wheel (around the MB symbol). For example, you can push it in quite far (without honking the horn) - it deforms almost like there is nothing behind it.

I dont remember this from the 2007 but I dont really honk my horn on a regular basis.

My first thought is the airbag, but I could not find any schematics/diagrams to confirm whether there should or should not be something directly behind the MB symbol.

Any thoughts?
