2003 E500 sport (sold), 2009 GL450, w213 E63 (waiting for ordering guide)
I don't have this problem, but my girlfriend has an '03 CLK 320, and it started to not shift out of first gear, and when put into reverse, it wouldn't click in and it would just stay in neutral. Shutting the car off and putting it back on would sometimes help the situation but it definitely didn't solve anything. I took it to my mechanic who does flawless work on my E500 and found that it was something with the computer that didn't allow it to shift properly. Not only that, but her transmission fluid was so bad that the gears started grinding on each other (careless blonde with a benz, id never do that) and she needed a whole other transmission because hers was so bad. imagine, as she also only has 74k miles which is crazy. I doubt any of you have bad transmission fluid like this, but definitely check the computer, I'm not exactly sure what or how but he told me it was computer related, and fixed it. For the used transmission, computer fix, and installation he charged $2500, this was 6 months ago. Since then the car has driven about 7k miles and absolutely nothing wrong with it, smooth shifts ( not rough like they used to be ). Only complaint is sometimes when driving through the gears, the rpm's rise all the way to about 3k before actually shifting. Other than that the car is perfect. Good luck to everyone and please post back with updates..

Hi,
I'm insane situation. Stuck in 1st gear check engine light on, button C/S stuck in S. Replaced b the battery and no go. Did not reset the computer yet. And as far as I know from the mechanic I don't have an auxiliary battery.
Last time.the mechanic check the computer the car had a lot of fault codes with 'under voltage'... He reseted the computer and after a week I'm stuck in first gear....

Ok dealer called and the problem is the "transmission conductor plate and retest (trans shift operation/check engine light". It's a $1200 job here in Chicago.
Good luck to anyone with same problem.

Just bought a 2007 E350 this past Saturday. Drove it home 40 miles just fine. Drove to work Tuesday, seemed fine. Took it through a touchless car wash, and five minutes later the Check Engine light comes on after a couple rough upshifts. On the drive home, about 20 miles into the drive, it stops upshifting. Now it's stuck in first gear. ("limp mode") Car's in the shop now, but not scheduled to be looked at til tomorrow. Hoping he can look at it sooner.
So what's the "best case" scenario? Replace the TCM?
STOOOOPID me for not buying the warranty!

Well....2 things:
1- Did you buy it from a MB dealership?
2 -If you just bought it (especially from a MB dealer) I think you should have a used car warranty by law if I'm not mistaken. I know I had like a 1500 mile warranty from the dealer I got mine from. It probably depends on where you are.

Nope... not from a MB dealer.
I just downlaoded the EPC parts tool to see if I can find out how much a TCM is, but I con't figure out how to get a price. I got the part number though..... Was also going to see what the primary and backup batteries cost, since I've read that that has been an issue for similar symptoms.

Get the part number then look up the cost at autohausaz.com or parts.com
Where are you located? Even if you didn't get it from a MB dealer you should get a limited used vehicle warranty by law I think. At the very least after only putting in 60 miles on the odometer you should definitely give the seller a call. Unless it was a private sale then I'd still give them a call.

Out Of Control!!
You have a bigger problem, if BS Billy aint an MB dealer it a very good chance he knows nothing repeat nothing about the MB diagnostics or have the specific tools.
I see this all the time I get calls from used car dealers with an MB and a check engine light on---they don't want it fixed they just want me to turn the light off(clear the fault) so some unsuspecting sap will buy the car!!
My suggestion is get your money back

Bought from a "reputable" used car dealer, but contract says "As Is".... in Colorado. I did call him, and he said "gee, that's strange", and offered to use his contacts to get any part(s) necessary at his cost. I'm pretty sure the mechanic, whom I trust a whole lot more, can get the better price.
The waiting for diagnosis is painful.... compounded by the fact that it seems like the dealer had to know there was an issue, and since it didn't show up until 60 miles after driving off the lot, he probably knows what it is, and what it took to "hide" it until the car got sold. Wish he would just tell me!

I'm at least as cynical as the next guy, but for the price I paid, I knew something had to be wrong with the car, but I have an awesome mechanic (even if he does prefer BMW). So now I know why I got a good deal, and I'm still happy:
Diag Error Code P2203: Transmission Conductor Plate
Total cost to repair: $1,052.17
Add that to what I paid for the car and I still got it for well below book.
Plus I got my "Direct Wire Power Cord" for my Escort Passport 9000ix radar detector installed.... which was absolutely necessary because back in 2007 they didn't think that an "auxiliary" power outlet (cigarette lighter) was a luxury worth having! ;-)
This whole "limp mode" AKA, my car knows somethings not right and demands that I take it in, is a little too close to "I Robot" for me sometimes ;-)

Won’t shift out of 1st
Hi,
I'm new here. Sorry if this thread has been posted before but I figure I speak on my own problems.
2006 e350. Bought used. Less than 1/2 a year driving it, my tranny started giving me issues. No check engine light. But the usual case of restarting would reset it back to normal. NOW it is stuck in 1st gear and check engine light on.
It will stay only in 1st gear and I do not want to drive it pass 30mph.
Going to see a specialist Monday or Tuesday but can anyone chime in on cost and repair?
And how long it generally takes to fix. Worried :/
