Unhappy please help!!! please visit work shop with a red battery icon ?

i have a 2003 E320 W211 and i keep getting a message that its in red and says please visit work shop and a battery picture, has anyone experienced this problem? If yes please let me know what could it be, sometime it doesn't come up at all sometimes when i start the car comes right up then i shut it off and start it again and its not on, ( sometimes come on in half hour of driving ) im guessing battery? battery cables? not sure i haven't tried anything yet to solve the problem, but hopefully i get helpful tips on here.

I have an 06 E320 CDI that did the same thing and it was the auxiliary battery under the heater filter fairing on the passenger side of the engine fire wall . It is the size of a motorcycle battery and was a $150 at the dealer but was replaced on warranty no charge . Good luck .

I've just swopped my alternator on my 03 270, same warning light, checked the battery with a multimeter & no charge going in while engine was running. Put the new (recon) alternator on, problem sorted.

BTW for a few weeks before is was getting the message " convenience functions temperally unavaible, battery protection" or so something similar

Assuming its not the batteries, replace alternator before the battery gets ruined. Its easy to check charging if you have multimeter to test the battery or use the dashboard voltage indicator to check battery voltage while engine is running.

On mine, i think the alternator was working intermitanly because, once the light came on, when i first tryed the meter on the battery it was getting charge so i assumed it was the battery not holding charge.

I got a new battery & it was ok for about 20 miles then light came back on again, checked it & not charging.

Incidently i had to remove a radiator hose to get the alternator out, is there a bleed nipple on the system??, as i have got a air lock, i assume you have to fill up via the header tank...
