Bluetec Acceptable Offset (getting rid of OEM 16s)

Looking through the 2007 MB Manual (available at http://www.mbusa.com/vcm/MB/DigitalA...lass_sedan.pdf ) I see that the W211 with the following range of wheels:

Bluetech : 16" 36mm Offset
4 Matic Sport Package: 18" 38mm
E350/550 non sport package: 17" 38mm
E350/550 sport package: Front 18" 30mm; rear 18" 39mm
E350/550/64 AMG Sport package: Front 18" 38mm; rear 18" 39mm
E63 Performance Package: Front 18" 38mm; rear 18" 44mm

I'm trying to find a nice set of aftermarket wheels, preferably 17" for ride reasons, but I'm not sure how to account for MB's wide range of offset. Because this is basically the same car as the ones listed above, can I use any wheel within the 30-39mm offset range without spacers (I'm assuming the 63 AMG has a completely different wheel setup to allow for the 44mm offset).

Can I go from my stock 36mm offset to a 35mm or 38mm without spacers or other changes?

Personally I would stick with the offset of the size rims you want to use. Therefore if you are going with 17' then use the 38mm offset. MB suspension geometry is very sensitive, I think you will not like the way the car handles when you steer (no pun intended) away from what is OEM. They even put out a list a few years back with some tire patterns that had a negative effect on handling and dealers were told not to sell those brand models of tires. Once you get up to sport, AMG, or Performance package there must be different suspensions components that require a larger offset.. In other words dont try to second guess whats listed. just my .02

My 2007 Bluetec has 35mm offsets. I replaced my wheels with 19" staggered also with 35mm offsets; no handling problems, much better than before, then again these are wider wheels. Check out pictures in my album.

Pine,

Did you have to do any modifications or did they just fit right on?
