Has anyone experienced a tail shaft bearing failure

A friend had the following experience.on his W211 diesel "The click/click/click I kept hearing under the center console was the press fit center bearing on driveshaft assembly snapping back and forth. The bearing and the propeller shaft have to be replaced.. it's $1,600 to get it fixed... and the propeller shaft has to come from Germany, so the car sits at the dealer for two weeks."

Does anyone know whether this model has a history of this & whether there has been a recall?. The car has done about 60,000 miles only.

Why would the tailshaft have to be replaced. All being well the bearing should just press off .

thanks,

JC
