Balance Shaft alignment

I've pulled the heads on my 2006 E350 (V6) and am now going back together. The engine is out of the car and on an engine stand to make things easier. I've got the cam timing figured out but not sure about the balance shaft. I assume that the shaft cannot skip teeth on the chain while the chain is loose (heads off) and so should be in the correct position when going back together, but would like to be sure before reinstalling the engine. Any way to check the timing of the balance shaft without removing the timing cover?

Well since you mentioned the balance shaft, i've got an advice, unrelated to to your question though, but if you've never had to change your balance shaft, then do it now, it will fail eventually, and since your engine is out and all, it would be wise to just get the new and improved part and replace it.
