The dreaded M272 Balance Shaft
#652
2 years ago I bought a 2006 E350 wagon with 160,000 miles not aware of this issue.
It had 1 owner who had it serviced like clockwork at the MB dealer every 4 months throughout the entire life of the car.
I have the full CarFax history and it was fully diagnosed on every visit.
I'm assuming that by 2009 this issue was already well known and being looked at on each servicing from that point on.
In the 2 years that I have had it the car has been perfect and the "check engine light" has never appeared.
I have done regular maintenance and had a new fuel pump put in recently.
The mechanic has told me the car is as clean as anything he has seen with this age/miles.
Is it possible, at 165,000 miles, that I might be one of those that "escaped" this problem?
Many people have said that it should show up by 80-100,000 miles.

Improved parts installed as of engine # 2729xx30 468993, if your engine # is below count yourself lucky. BTW, regardless of the best guesses you may have read there is no crystal ball as to when failure can happen.

Is there some number of the percentage, of the numbers in the range, that are affected (ex. 20%).
I would be interested to know how many failed after 150,000 miles, but I guess the stats don't exist

Since it is a wear issue, I would bet that either you are good, or the excessive maintenance saved the car.
Keep up the oil changes.

There are youtube videos on how you can inspect it to see if it affects you or not. There are still many threads these days of the balance shaft failing. But 27 pages worth of replies tells you it happens to a good percentage.

It's possible the balance shaft was done early on during the warranty but you don't have the record. A dealer can help you out with that. 100% of 06 E350s have the bad balance shaft.

WDBUF90X97X223347 - Does anyone know If I am affected? Car has 120K on it and dealer said it might be a camshaft position sensor and ignition coil.

As it concerns timing chain guide wheel (engine 273) you're fine.

Yikes.
I got p0015, p0022 and p0012 code on my c230 2007. I'm not in the affected range but kinda close I guess? My VIN is WDBRF52H97F882510. I'm gonna change the oil very soon. It's kinda dark. I bought it almost a week ago! Should I be worried???? The car has 194km, roughly 120 000 in miles

Modified parts installed beginning with engine # 30 468993, your engine # 30 499635 should be fine it is past affected range. Best case scenario you may need to replace all 4 camshaft solenoids.

Hey guys I am in Australia, I have a 2007 E350 Elegance wagon with sports package.
How do I tell if I have this issue, what are the signs or sounds to look out for?
I have a slight knocking sound on cold start up that disappears in a few seconds, is this part of it?
Cheers.

If someone could please let me know if this VIN is subject to the balance shaft issue, I would really appreciate it. Thank you..

Just went to check out the car with him and stopped by benz afterwards; they told me the fuel pump/tank was never addressed and the extended warranty expired.
Knowing that it may in the future have the balance shaft problem, he is going to pass on this one. Very much appreciated Konigstiger (as always) thank you.

Many people have said that it should show up by 80-100,000 miles.

Hi guys,
So I am getting frustrated of going to a workshop every week because of check engine light.
I had check light on my dash panel with errors 1200 and 1208, camshaft, timing chain and other relatable issues to these errors.
After few days after they replaced all parts on my engine I had my check engine light on again, so i went back to them and asked to fix it, and it turns out they didn't replace a camshaft positioner ( A272 050 44 47), they told that they didn't see any wear on it before,
Alright, took my car in again, they told me that they will replace it with little no use position that they had i told them alright, it sounds like the problem could occur someday again, because its used, they told me no, it all should be good,
Turns out it wasnt, check again in my dash, went back to them and then they said, ok, will replace with a new one, great, lets do it,
They did, but 1 hour after i got my car back i got a check engine light back on and now I don't believe any work they do
The reputation has been great to the workshop, know some guys who go there to fix their cars, but now I am going crazy about it,
The question is, maybe someone else had the same issue on their car?
Maybe there is something that doesn't come in head that could be a problem?
I don't know, right now I am just looking for answers.
Of course i can take my car to another workshop but that's not an option right now, cause they have to fix it, because i paid them lots of money.
To mention, its not some workshop, they work on all high end cars, they mostly work with MB, they are sertifiied by Mercedes and don't trust them anymore.
Car has 172k kilometers driven.
If anyone has something to mention, an idea, or anything that might be helpfull ill be happy to hear.

On the other hand, I heard people people mentioned "jumped a tooth", I am afraid that they were saying it figuratively not literally? It's true, under multi-channel scope, some guys could measure precisely the distant against crankshaft. If that's what they meant?

This was at 44700 miles, check engine light came on but no other indications there were issues. Motor ran normal and mileage was unaffected. MB USA only covered 15% of the $6300 repair, it was a year over the cut off date for the settlement. IMO with the mileage and service records I had they should have covered the whole repair. I still have the car and still love it. Just put a set of Continental Purecontact LS tires and it rides like an S class
