Bizarre rattle in C pillar

Bizarre rattle in C pillar
2007 E550. I have a very odd rattle in my right side C pillar. It is easily heard shut I hit any sort of sharp bump - even the reflector dots on the road. The rattle almost sounds hollow. If you can imagine dropping a hollow wooden ball on a wooden platform and having it bounce a few times, then that's the sound. The dealer says it's a bad seatbelt retractor and wants $560 to replace. Any ideas are much appreciated.

Thanks konigstiger. This is very helpful. Not sure yet if I want to tackle this job or not. But it's good to know I can get a reasonably priced replacement!
