Instrument cluster removal

The speedometer in my 2003 e500 instrument cluster isn't working properly. When the car is stopped the needle doesn't go down to 0 and stays at 30 Kms/hr. When the car starts moving the speed displayed in the analog instrument is 30 kms/hr above real speed. The speed in the digital display reads correctly.

I did some research on this and it seems that the problem is with an internal gear in the instrument cluster speedometer which can be replaced. I found a place that repairs the cluster at 1/3 the cost of a new cluster: http://xemodex.com/technologyimprove...-mercedes-benz

I spoke with the technical dept at Xemodex and they told me that if I remove the cluster myself and don't drive the car, there will not be any need to connect the computer and reset the cluster afterwards as only the analog speedometer will be serviced and it is a mechanical repair. Therefore there will not be any issue with the electronics, odometer etc.

I plan to go with this option since the new cluster is $1500 plus 1-1/2 hour labor at the dealer so to replace with a new part will cost aprox. $2,000. If I can remove the cluster myself and get the cluster repaired at Xemodex it will cost me $450.

I need to get the instructions on how to remove the instrument cluster. Can anybody help with this?

It is simply a matter of pulling the plastic surround out, removing 4 exposed bolts and disconnecting electrical connector – check your PM
