Keyless Go woes

So I went to my local Benz 'specialist' to plug my car into a star system and to see if my car needs to be calibrated to the key for my keyless go to work...but fail.

my keyless entry works just fine. Keyless Go, not at all. I asked if the car needs to be calibrated to the key, but he said if that was a problem, the car wouldn't start at all with the key. Any truth in that?

I also brought with me an SL55 keyless knob and that didn't work either. The pins inside the knobs look fine and I can see them move forwards slightly when clicked. The shifter looks 'normal' inside the two holes where the pins need to go...nothing broken off.

The guy said i'd need a new shifter mechanism from the dealership...

What are the opinions on this? Are there any other avenues which I need to go down first? I kinda think the guy was just full of bs and he didn't tell me anything useful apart from the fact that the keyless button isn't working/recognising the key (or something like that)

this came across my mind the other day - is the brake switch functioning? If that is out, it would affect if you can start the car. I am a NOOBEE here in the MB world, but it was a random thought I had at lunch today for some reason. Got back to the office and saw this post.

I have a shifter mechanism if you still need one.

Guys I'm confused. I got a star diagnostic done and apparently my keyless go is 'ok'. I have looked down at the base of the shifter to see if the wire has been sheered....nope, it's fine. I replaced the brake switch for an oem MB part from the dealer. Any ideas?

I know this is clutching at straws, but my front brakes are nearly toast (they're squeaking and the feel is a lot weaker now) so it's time to change them. However, I don't think my fronts have sensors or else they'd have gone off by now. Could they possibly have anything to do with it? I'll be fitting brake pad wear sensors when I change the discs and pads anyway.
