transmission fluid black
Hello everyone. I just had an indy change my transmission fluid and he said it was black and that I should get it changed again in about one year. Is black transmission fluid a sign of trouble? Car has been running great!

MB recommends the trans oil/filter to be changed every 39,000 miles. I only did an oil change (w/o filter) at 40k and it was pretty black. Yesterday I finally had time to service the tranny with a new filter and oil. At the bottom of the trans pan it didn't look dirty at all until I put a spot light over it. You could see all the debris...it looked like metalic dust!! You want this stuff to be cleaned out for sure.
Did your mechanic flush the system or just empty and replace the oil in the trans pan (~3.3L)?

The smell of the fluid is much more important than the color---you say black, how black or what shade of black or brown black--------------you can see where this could go--in any event I think you are just fine.

The fluid was black - black. Pulled the filter apart and it looked ok. Magnets had a fine powder on them but that was it. This was not a flush. fluid and filter replacement. $276 Indy mech. Mech said everything looked fine and car drives great. I think it even shifts smoother. I'm going to have it changed again in 40k miles.
