e500 waterpump

Hi All
I'm thinking of buying a 03 E500
The car dealer says it needs a waterpump.
Ive worked on lots of cars and did the waterpump on my 94 E320.
Can anyone give me some tips or a DIY.
I don't have a manual (I haven't bought the car yet)
it has 90,000 miles and seems in good shape otherwise
They're asking $10,800
Any feedback appreciated

The water pump is not a huge deal. They aren't easy, but they aren't a major issue. There's no real secret tip or anything to offer. If you did your 94 E320 then you can do this. The V8 is a bit more complex in the front, but it will look familiar.

The Kelly Blue Book value is around $15,000 in excellent condition, so $10,000 sounds pretty good if the rest of the car is nice.

Offer 10,000 out the door including them putting on new water pump and you test drive before final commitment.

it depends, are you able to test drive it? Does it have the CEL light on? The dealer could be saying it needs a water pump to cover up a larger issue. I would expect any reputable dealer would repair the car (they all have mechanics who work with them for this sort of thing) and charge the full price. The fact that they are (according to their story) leaving money on the table makes me very suspicious.

I agree. Dealers do not volunteer car issues. 2003 Aimatic suspension can be very costly to replace.

i agree, i would be worried about the motor having possibly overheated, which may show-up later down the road when you get the waterpump fixed. Why buy a car with a problem?
