2007 E350 Cruise Control

I am a proud owner of my first MB. It is used but new to me, I took it on a weekend trip and found that while the cruise control does engage it will not maintain a constant speed. It is constantly accelerating and de-accelerating around 5 mph above and below the set speed. I was reading through various threads and I am 98% positive that I do not have the cruise control feature that maintains a pre-determined distance from a car in front of you. I say this because there was no one in front of me at the time. If anyone could offer any ideas as to what I am either doing wrong or something for me to check for issues I would appreciate it.

If the MB systems like most others, then its a vacuums based system that actuates it and if you have a leak in it, then it will behave like that. Any one elaborate on if its like this or if its a different setup?

This sounds like a tough one - the cruise control is not a separate module, but the feature is a program that is executed by the engine control module, and the electronic traction system. Signals from the streering column module transmit the cruise control switch information to the engine control module.
The electronic traction system (ESP with ASR in our cars) and the ABS brakes are controlled from the same module.

If there was a major fault in one of those module I would think that you'd have other warnings or errors appearing.

There are also no springs, vacuum lines, etc. specifically for the cruise control - everything is oprerated electronically, because the car has drive by wire throttle, and can even command the Adaptive Brake (no more SBC brakes in 2007 vehicles) system to slow the car down when going down a hill.

Also, in my eperience, the engine control module is very reluctant to allow the cruise control feature to engage if anything else is wrong (ABS issues, ESP systems inoperative, main electrical bus undervolt, etc.).

Are you experiencing any other issues regarding the powertrain or brakes?

I am experiencing no other issues with the car (that I know of) everything seems to operate as it should. No other Dummy lights on or anything like that. I have not got very deep into all of the features the car has to find out if something else is not functioning.

FWIW my cruise control is rock solid. It will maintain the set speed no matter what the road is doing. Steep inclines, going down hill, it just does not matter... When going down a steep incline it will even brake to maintain speed. I just have standard cruise control.

Look at the front of your car and see if there's a clear square plastic cover in the middle of your front grill, if there is, then you have distronic (radar cruise control) if there isn't then I'd say you have a vacuum leak
