Trunk opening handle stuck

Trunk opening handle stuck
The handle in the trunk to open the boot, gets stuck when i open the boot manually. I then have to push it back to its original position in order to use it again manually. Else it works perfectly with the key or opening from the button in the driver door.

Is it just dirt doing this? Will just spraying it with WD40 do it, or should I use some other kind of lubricant?

Mine does this too so I'd love to find a solution. Wondering if a water leak issue to the inside of the trunk lid but I could be way off.

WD40 worked like a charm on our 2008. Use a rag to keep from dripping.
