E500 Universal Cat Converter

A few years ago, I experienced the problem of radiator fluid leaking into the my E500's tranny and the dealer did not want to honor the TSB from the factory and demanded $7K. I posted a plea for help and Konigsteiger really helped me out. Ever since, I promised myself that I will reapy the community back. So here goes:

Recently, one of the catalytic converters on my 2003 E500 went bad and started to make noise. MB part number is 211-4900919. I found pricing around $1200 for MB parts which included the pipes, etc.

I found a universal Cat converter and just had it installed. The mechanic said that the fit was great and all worked out. The price of the unit was $113 plus shipping and I bought it from www.carid.com.

Plesae note that to do this, the old Cat has to be cut out and the universal unit has to be welded in its place.

FLOWMASTER® 2830124 - 283 Series Stainless Steel OBDII Round Catalytic Converter (2.25" Inlet / 2.25" Outlet)

Hope this helps anyone else needing a cat converter.

Not sure what you mean by front vs. rear...My E500 has two cats, right and left. It has been running fine and I have not felt any performance issues.

There are two cats on each side of the car for a e500... At least for an 03... 2 sensored ones towards the front... and 2 towards the back... kinda in the middle... My drivers side rear one is rattling(without sensor)... Wondering which ones you replaced.

If your rears are rattling then don't replace them. Simply cut them out and enjoy a slight performance boost. Not sure what they do pollution-wise, but if your state does not use that sniffing hose, you should be OK as cutting the rear cats will not throw a CEL.

And yes, there are 2 cats on each side, so a total of 4. 2 closer to the engine and 2 towards the middle of the car which you can actually see quite easily

I don't know anyone who will do that around here though... Illegal in this area... I already asked 3 different local mechanics... I can't weld anyway... lol

Must be the one on the back side as the one I replaced did not have a sensor.
