If the main is dead the car propably is dead too, in other words it will not start.
If the aux is dead You would have difficulties using convenience equipment i believe. To that You'll have a lot of different alarms ringin during power up and driving...

Whoops I think you're correct, upon further reading the Aux battery was no longer needed as the SBC system was also eliminated with the W211 facelift. Even on the pre-facelift, the Aux battery is on a separate relay that cannot power the starter motor and may not even be powerful enough to.
