Merc vows return to top quality
Mercedes chief executive Jurgen Hubert conceded in an interview with German newspaper, Handelsblatt, that there had been a growing number of quality problems with the marque's cars in recent years.
The troubles have arisen alongside Mercedes' expansion into cheaper markets with the A-class. The US-built M-class 4x4 has also been criticised for poor the build interior quality of its interior.
The newspaper said that only Mercedes between six and 10 years old fared well in a quality survey by German analysts. The SLK roadster fared best in cars between one and three years old, but only managed to take 12th place overall.
Hubert vowed to personally oversee improvements and restore Mercedes image, saying component suppliers would have to ready themselves for quality control visits. He told Handelsblatt: 'Our aim is to become the market leader in quality.'
What Car? has criticised Mercedes' build and cabin materials in recent years, but is pleased to report that in our latest report on the new Mercedes E-class, there was a noticeable improvement in quality over the old car. (What Car?, April 2002, on sale March 13)

I think this is a very simple obstacle to overcome. All that is needed is a conscious effort to bring back the old methods of quality control, it is already know that we lead the way in technology. They just need to make sure they focus on things that will keep the customers coming back and that is a high level of quality with reliability.
